The Veterans Administration of Ghana (VAG) has launched this year’s Poppy Appeal at the Retired Commissioned Officers’ Club House in North Ridge, Accra on Friday 10 October 2025.

The launch was made during a band concert organised by the Ghana Armed Forces Central Band, to raise funds through the sale of poppies to equip the VAG Medical Centre at Amasaman, expand it to include maternity and children's wards as well as purchase an ambulance for the infirmary.

Speaking at the event, the Guest of Honour, the Deputy Minister for Defence Honourable Ernest Brogya Genfi, underscored government's commitment to the welfare of veterans and announced plans to establish veteran-friendly departments in all military hospitals and a home ownership scheme for retiring officers. He urged Ghanaians to make it a duty to ensure that those who served the nation live in dignity and comfort.

He donated One Hundred Thousand Cedis (100,000) on behalf of the Ministry of Defence.

Honourable Genfi, called on corporation organisations, institutions and the general public to contribute to improving the lives of veterans, whom he described as an embodiment of sacrifice and service to the nation and humanity.

The Military High Command, led by the Chief of the Defence, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, donated Two Hundred Thousand Ghana Cedis (200,000) to support the initiative.

Earlier in the opening address, VAG Executive Director Brigadier General Seidu Mumuni Adams described the red poppy as a global symbol of sacrifice and remembrance, which originated from the battlefields of World War 1. He emphasised that the appeal has been a crucial initiative to raise funds for the welfare of veterans and their families, transforming remembrance into tangible support.

Brigadier General Adams highlighted the pressing need for support at the Veterans Clinic in Amasaman, which serves a large concentration of veterans in the Greater Accra Region.

He called on Ghanaians, the corporate community, and government agencies to answer the call for support by purchasing a poppy and making donations.
